Upper East drivers attend road safety workshop

Bolgatanga drivers in the Upper East Region have attended a training workshop on Road Safety and Customer Care, aimed at upgrading and improving their skills.

The programme attracted drivers from Ghana Road Transport Union (GPRTU) from Bawku Municipality, Kassena-Nankana Municipality and Kassena-Nankana West District.

The Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training together with Ghana Skills and Technology Development Project provided the sponsorship package for Transport Services Consult to undertake the training programme.

Mr Justice Amegashie, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the consult, said the purpose of the training was to empower the drivers on safety driving and help improve the relationship among them and their passengers.

He said 90 per cent of fatalities and injuries on the roads are due driving errors adding that driving should not be a source of death or hazards for members of the society.

Mr Megaship, who was the former CEO of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, impressed upon the drivers to be more responsible in discharging their duties by exercising care and avoiding over speeding, overloading and drunk driving.

“Mobility without responsibility is a recipe for road crashes. As drivers you must bear in mind that you are carrying breadwinners of families and, therefore, you need to be mindful of road traffic regulations,” he said.

Whilst calling on passengers not to engage in acts that would interrupt the driver when on the wheel, Mr Amegashie urged pedestrians to avoid using mobile phones when using the road since that could disrupt their attention.

Mr Godfred Abulbire, Regional GPRTU, explained that what informed the national executives of the Union to organise the training programme was to help address the spate of road accidents in the country.
