Use ICT to enhance academic work - Barton-Odro

Mr. Ebo Barton Odro, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coast North Constituency, has advised pupils at the basic level to take advantage of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) to enhance their academic advancement.

He said ICT has over the years shown to be an important element that improves pupils’ levels of understanding

The First Deputy Speaker said this at a ceremony to commission an ICT centre at Nyinasin MA Basic School in Cape Coast aimed at developing interest of the pupils the study of science at the basic school level.

The 20 –seater ICT centre which is fully connected to the internet is expected to benefit school pupils at Nyinasin, Koforidua, Brabedze, Dahia and the surrounding communities.

It is the fourth of its kind in the constituency since the Mr. Odro took office as MP for the constituency, exhibiting his commitment to development of ICT education.

“With the establishment of the ICT centres, students would get the opportunity to acquire scientific knowledge and practical skills through experimentation, it will go a long way to improve the knowledge of students and pupils in ICT subjects, significantly in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)”. he said.

Mr. Odro said education had gradually moved from the period of limiting teaching and learning to the classroom to a stage of ICT and internet connectivity and pupils at the basic school level should not be deprived of such an opportunity.

He further advised the pupils to desist from using technology to engage in vices like cyber-crime known in the local parlance as ‘sakawa’ and watching of pornographic materials.

Ms. Florence Inkoom, Metropolitan Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), commended the MP for his immense contribution towards the improvement of ICT education to enhance quality education in the constituency

She said the science resource centres would help GES to achieve its objective of raising a new generation of students with strong foundation in science and technology and a strong ability for creative thinking.

She therefore admonished teachers to upgrade their skills in ICT to ensure that their pupils benefit effectively from the facilities.

Ms. Inkoom called on parents to offer the necessary support to the teachers to ensure effective maintenance of the facility to achieve it intended purpose.

Mrs. Patience Osiban, Headmistress of Nyinasin M/A Basic School said the facility it would give the pupils the practical ICT foundation which hitherto was taught without facilities.
