Kpone (GAR), April 07, GNA - The Tema Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr David Quaye-Annang, has stressed the need for building developers to engage Structural Engineers to ensure quality work. He noted that many buildings even at the construction stage collapse because of sub-standard materials and shoddy work by masons and contractors.
Mr Annang made the call on Saturday, when he and officials of the Tema office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) presented relief items to the Kpone Traditional Council (KTC). The Kpone community centre collapsed and property worth over 600 million cedis was destroyed in a rainstorm last Sunday. The MCE donated two bundles of roofing sheets and a computer with accessories to the Council while NADMO presented a box of Frytol cooking oil and bags of rice to some fishermen who were affected in the rainstorm.
Mr Annang said after the disaster, engineers of the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) inspected the building and detected that the blocks contained a lot of sand with little cement. He stressed the need for effective supervision at every stage of building construction to ensure that proper work was being done. The MCE promised that the engineers from the Assembly would supervise the re-construction of the community centre. The whole building collapsed and caved in into the Chief's office and the general office destroying files, computers and books. The Registrar of the Council, Mr Harry Attipoe, received the items and promised that they would be used for the purpose they given. 07 April 07
