The Volta River Authority (VRA) as part of its support to improve education delivery in its impacted communities, has donated a Nissan Navara Pick Up valued at about 37000US Dollars to the education directorate of the Asuogyaman District Assembly.
The vehicle is to enable the Directorate to step-up monitoring and supervision of schools within the Asuogyaman District, which is one of the key objectives of the Free Compulsory Basic Education in the country.
Presenting the vehicle on behalf of Ing Kirk Koffi, the VRA Chief Executive, Ms Abla Fiadjoe, the Director, General Services Department, said, continuous interaction with communities around VRA’s installations showed that education is the most strategic need of the people.
“At the back of generating electricity, we are concerned about education in our communities. We recognise that if you tackle education, you tackle all aspects of development, because the human being is the most important part of development,” Ms Fiadjoe noted.
She said, “The challenge is that the achievement gap between the best schools in the country and those in our communities are very disappointing. And we think we have a moral obligation to do something.
“VRA needs people from a whole range of professional cadres. But the challenge we face is that around us we see people in our communities, who do not have the skills required to be employed,” Ms Fiadjoe noted.
Over the years, VRA had come up with a number interventions such as award of scholarships, donations of exercise and story books, and teaching and career guidance programmes, all to help address the challenges of education in its catchments.
The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Madam Patricia Gymafi, thanked the VRA and said the gesture was commendable because efficiency in school’s management is a major objective of the free basic education in the country.
She said holistic education could not be shouldered by the Government alone hence VRA’s intervention would enhance supervision and monitoring and overall education delivery in the district.
The Asuogyaman District Director of Education, Madam Mavis Yirenkye expressed gratitude to the VRA saying, the vehicle had come on the nick of time to enable them to convey exams materials to various centres for the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Education (BECE).
