Akormu-Bana (E/R), Dec. 16, GNA - Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama on Monday commissioned a 200 million cedi Junior Secondary School(JSS) block at Akormu-Bana in the Yilo Krobo District financed from the HIPC Relief Fund.
The provision of the three-classroom block to replace the old one which collapsed nine years ago, brought to an end the distress endured by about 90 pupils from the community as they attended classes under trees while some commuted to and from other communities to attend classes.
Vice President Mahama, who inaugurated the project as part of his three-day working visit to the Eastern Region, urged parents in the community to ensure that their children pursued higher education to become responsible future leaders.
Education, he pointed out, would develop the talents of the youth to give them better opportunities in life to break the cycle of poverty in their families and enable them to serve their communities and the nation.
Alhaji Mahama who addressed various durbars in the Asuogyaman, Manya and Yilo Krobo districts, had earlier inspected the progress of work on a seven-kilometre Sikaben-Obawale-Sutsunya road, also in the Yilo Krobo District.
The feeder road is being rehabilitated and tarred by Messrs A. Nagesten Company Limited at 2.7 billion cedis. Addressing durbars of chiefs and people at Atimpoku, Asesewa and Obawale, the Vice President said the mission of his tour was to develop cordial relations with them, listen to their concerns about government's programmes and monitor the performance of public officials. He said their feedback would give the government the opportunity to develop policies and programmes that would be more responsive to their needs.
Vice President Mahama said the NPP administration believed in participatory democracy, good governance and the rule of law, which it needed the support of Ghanaians to achieve.
He, however, cautioned against the politics of lies and deceit, which he noted, often engendered conflicts, saying " politics is about welfare and development and politicians must be true to their faith and desist from peddling lies and rumours to secure political power."
The second day of the Vice President's tour will take him to the Kwahu South and Afram Plains during which he will inspect the Urban Five Project at Nkawkaw, the Nkawkaw -Atibie road project and address a durbar at Mpraeso.
On the way to the Afram Plains he will inspect the Kwahu-Tafo-Adawso road and inaugurate a market at Mame Krobo.
