Veep commissions water project for Parembo

Parembo (BA) Nov 3, GNA- Vice- President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, has commissioned a 2.9 billion -cedi water project for the twin communities of Parembo and Sawaba in the Pru District, as part of his four days official visit to the Brong Ahafo Region.

The project which was sponsored by the Government under the Village Infrastructure Programme, would benefit the over 10,000 people who are being afflicted by guinea worm and other water-borne diseases. With the provision of portable water, it is expected that the community's name would soon drop from the list of 20 highly endemic guinea worm areas in the country.

Already reported cases in the community had dropped from over 1,000 in 1999 to 116 this year.

Vice -President Mahama, who dedicated his third day in the Region to interact with the people of the District, addressed durbars at Yeji, Prang, Zabrama and Abease.

He assured the people that their common request for the tarring of the Prang- Kintampo road would be speedily addressed, in addition to the call for the upgrading of feeder roads, extension of electricity the provision of police stations and senior secondary schools. Alhaji Mahama said five kilometres of the Prang-Kintampo road had already been awarded for tarring, while the Kofi Basare-Nchamba feeder road and the Nakpoe Nsuano road have been awarded for upgrading under a British Government Grant.

The Yeji -Wuti-Dekoy feeder road is also under construction. Vice- President Mahama said the request of the communities for projects to improve their standards of living were in line with Government's agenda to work closely with them to fight poverty and generate wealth.

In line with this goal, about 60 projects estimated at 40 billion cedis have been executed under education, health, energy, water and sanitation and other sectors in the District.

These include the construction of three- unit classroom blocks each for Yeji, Kobre and Konkoma, the provision of electricity to Kachawura, the distribution of 12,000 dual desk for a number of schools and the provision of accommodation for health personnel at Parembo-Sawaba.

Nana Yaw Kabresi II, the Paramount Chief of the area, commended the government for the projects and appealed for the dredging of the Volta Lake to make it easier for the ferry to transport goods and passengers smoothly and safely.

At Prang, Nana Kwadwo Nyarko II was also grateful for the construction of a three- unit classroom block for Danu Fawa and bungalows for teachers at Ajaraja-Beposo, a Health Centre for Prang, a Health Centre with nurses quarters for Nchamba, regravelling of the Prang-Abease road and other projects in the Traditional Area.

He however appealed for the construction of a girls' dormitory for the Prang Senior Secondary School and the provision of a school bus. Vice- President Mahama pledged to adopt Prang as his second home and to make personal interventions to ensure that the area received it fair share of the national cake.

At Zabrama and Abease, he told the people that their request for the extension of electricity was genuine as living in "darkness was tantamount to sickness".

The request, he said would be granted to boost agriculture and other socio- economic activities.

At all the durbars the Vice- President addressed, he introduced the New Patriotic Party's Parliamentary Candidate, Dr David Amoah, for the Pru Constituency and urged the people to give him their mandate in the December 7 polls.

The Vice -President was accompanied by Professor Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi, the Minister of Ports, Harbours and Railways, Nana Kwadwo Seinti, the Regional Minister, Mr. Cassius Osei Poku, the District Chief Executive for Atebubu, other public officials and regional executives of the NPP. 03 Nov. 04
