One person whom the police at Berekum could not identified immediately died on the spot when two cars, a Nissan pickup with the registration number GW 833 P and a taxi cab also a Nissan with the registration number BA 1086 collided headlong near Kato in the Berekum Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region around 6:30pm on Saturday.

Four others in the taxi cab travelling from Sunyani to Berekum sustained various degrees of injuries but were rushed to the Berekum Holy Family Hospital for treatment.

According to unsubstantiated information from eyewitnesses, the dead man was an immigration officer stationed at Accra Airport and a native of Berekum.

The dead including the driver and three others were in the taxi whilst, the pickup was occupied by the driver and a lady according to Inspector Evans Preko of the Berekum Divisional Police Command who helped to convey the deceased to the morgue.

The driver of the pickup whose name was not given was said to be a worker at the Berekum Holy Family Hospital.

Eyewitnesses said he was driving from Berekum to Sunyani and in an attempt to overtake another car collided with the taxi cab killing one person instantly.

The driver of the pickup and his lady occupant sustained minor injuries.

Information alleged that he smelled of alcohol; an allegation Inspector Preko confirmed to DAILY GUIDE on Sunday via phone but said the case is being handled by another officer so he could not provide names.

The taxi cab was smashed leaving the windscreen, side doors, bumper and some of the tyres badly damaged. The deceased was trapped at the back seat and it took several minutes for the police, fire officers and good samaritans in the area to retrieve the body.

A lot of commuters returning from funeral either at Sunyani, Berekum or other places in the region had to stop at the spot resulting in traffic jam. The pickup was carrying a mattress and disjointed bed.

One of the cars, a red Toyota Corolla with registration number AS 3777 which stopped at the spot to sympathize with the victims also had an accident about 2 kilometres away from the spot injuring the driver in the process.

The driver was also rushed to the same hospital.
