The villagers from Krobom and Maadaem near Apedwa in the East Akyem Municipality, have appealed to government to construct a bridge over the Densu river in the area to enhance the economic development of the area.
The two villages are separated from Adarkwa, the marketing centre in the Suhum Municipality,by the Densu River.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Kwabina Anakwa Fenni, a resident of Maadaem village, said farmers in villages around send their cocoa and other farm produce to Adarkwa to sell and their children also attend school at Adarkwa.
He said whenever it rained and the Densu river overflow it’s banks, it took about four to five days for the waters to subside under normal situations and in worse conditions, it could take two weeks for the water to subside and during this time, many of the farm products got rotten on the farm and children from the villages were unable to cross the river to go to school.
He said sometimes when they have shortage of salt or fish and the river overflow its banks, they had to do without it until the water subsided before they could get to the market to buy some.
Mr Christian Ahor, the Ewe chief in the area, said the lack of a bridge over the Densu River was the major challenge of the people in the area because it affected the economy of farmers and the education of their children.
He said last term, his son had to repeat the class because it rained and he missed two examination papers. He therefore appealed to the government to come to their aid by constructing a bridge over the Densu River.
Madam Adzo Etovo, a 51 year old resident of Krobom, said when the bridge is provided for the area, all their problems would be solved because it would make it easier for customers to travel to the area with vehicles to buy their farm produce.
