Violence Looms … As Nungua Imposes Chief On Oyibi

Information reaching The Citizen indicates that some individuals purporting to be the representatives of the Chief and Elders of the Nungua Divisional Council in the Greater Accra region have imposed an individual to act as chief of Oyibi. In an interview with Nii Applerh Doku Peter Boye, the Spokesperson for the Oyibi traditional council, he said in 1995 Nii Okansah V, the occupant of the Oyibi stool died leaving the stool vacant He said after the death of Nii Okansah V, they encountered difficulties in the installation of a new chief culminating in a decision to appoint Emmanuel Nii Borkety Bortey, a regent of the area to act as a chief. According to him, the people of Oyibi and its environs have enjoyed peace until last year when some people from Nungua imposed Mr. Benjamin Borteye Okantan as chief of the area. This development according to him, has led to intense disagreement in the area which if not checked would develop into a full blown conflict. According to him, there has been a long standing litigation at the Ga Traditional Council, the reason why the stool Elders of Oyibi decided not to install a new chief. He expressed dissatisfaction with the action taken by the folks from Nungua, saying they have no authority and power to install a chief for them. He averred that during the installation of the said chief; the legitimate elders as well the stool Father of Oyibi were ignored. Nii Doku stated that Benjamin Okantan is an imposter and should not be accorded any courtesy. According to him, all lands sold by the previous chief and being develop by their legitimate owners are being destroyed by the representatives of the imposter. Series of complaints made to the police at Oyibi, he said, have not yielded any positive result, saying no action has been taken to resolve the impasse. He appealed to the Minister for Interior, the National Security Coordinator and the Inspector General of Police to intervene.
