Vodafone has supported the Homowo festival to the tune of GHC20,000, as part of its commitment to Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.

The telecommunications company has already stepped up its commitment to Ghana by supporting the Asafotufiam festival of the people of Ada in the Greater Accra region.

This latest support covers the four Ga traditional councils within Greater Accra including La, Ga Mashie and Osu – and reflects the company’s deep ties with the communities in which it operates.

Commenting on the donation, Agnes Emefa Essah, Sales and Marketing Director at

Vodafone Ghana said: “Ghana is a very strategic part of our outlook as a technologically relevant company. Over the years, our presence as a key partner in key traditional celebrations such as Odwira, Asafotufiam and Kundum, has elevated us in the eyes of Ghanaians and this is something we want to continue doing.”

The chiefs and people of the respective traditional councils expressed their appreciation to Vodafone for the support and also commended the company for introducing innovative products to empower its customers. Vodafone, in addition, presented SIM cards, airtime and other souvenirs to aid the traditional councils in their celebration.

Homowo is derived from two Ga words - "Homo" meaning hunger, and "Wo," meaning to hoot at, hence the name hooting at hunger.

The festival which is celebrated by the Ga people of Ghana signifies a period of merrymaking following a prolonged drought they faced during a journey to their present settlement. It is also an occasion to take stock of the past and restore relations among feuding people or groups.
