Volta Model School in distress

Ms Florence Happy Eddico, the Headmistress of Volta Regional Model School Complex, has appealed to the Ho Municipal Assembly to provide the School with classrooms and other infrastructure.

Ms Eddico made the appeal when Mr Benjamin Kpodo, the Member of Parliament for Ho Central, presented 1,800 Ghana cedis towards the purchase of 60 bags of cement for a classroom project being undertaken by the School/Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

She said the School, which used to be the first choice for children of the elite in the Municipality, has lost that position due to infrastructure challenges.

“We have nothing. We lack everything including decent washrooms,” Ms Eddico said.

She said the School could have collapsed but for its good academic performances in the Basic Education Certificate Examinations in recent times.

Ms Eddico said teachers were finding it difficult to handle about 70 pupils in a class with no space to move about and appealed to the government to complete a GETFund classroom block that had remained uncompleted since 2012.

Mr Kpodo commended the PTA for the foresight and promised to give further assistance to the School including laptops.

The School, established 32 years ago under the auspices of the Regional Co-ordinating Council as model pre-school, can only boast of dilapidated structures.

It however has a beautiful signpost directing visitors to the School along an uneven and tortuous road.

The nursery and kindergarten pupils are making do with classrooms of leaking and caved-in ceilings and broken louvers.

Ghana News Agency’s checks revealed that the School’s sewerage system has been down for years with waste water spilling to classrooms anytime the washroom was used.

Pupils were compelled to mount their desks anytime it rains. Teaching and Learning materials also got destroyed by rain.
