Volta NPP Angry With Leaders

Ho -- The Volta Regional Youth wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have criticized the party's national leadership for mortgaging the regional party to a trio who are sowing seeds of confusion.

The NPP youth, in an interview with The Heritage, named the three men as Mr. Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, deputy Volta Regional Minister; Mr. Tommy Amematekpor, a presidential aide and Mr. Kenwuud Nuworsu, acting regional chairman.

They issued the condemnation in reaction to a Joy FM news report of Tuesday, July 22, 2003 that the NPP regional secretary, Mr. Kwame Atta, has been suspended from office by a section of the NPP regional executive committee (REC).

The youth who blamed deputy regional minister, Dzamsi for allegedly masterminding Atta's suspension, predicted that the problems of the Volta regional NPP would remain unsolved if the mortgaging was not ended.

"They have contributed to the confusion in the party that has resulted into a legal battle at the Ho High Court" said the youth, adding that they had previously objected to the claims against the secretary describing them as blasphemous.

The NPP youth have therefore called upon the NPP national leadership to take "decisive action on the issue immediately" to ensure peace, unity and stability within the regional NPP.

They threatened to go on an offensive demonstration if the acting regional chairman and his cohorts dared prevent the regional secretary from entering his office.

The youth blamed President J.A. Kufuor for all the confusion in the regional branch of the party as he and the national leadership are doing nothing to bring sanity to bear on its members.

They warned that Kwame Atta's position is elective and since no notice has been circulated to delegates that will warrant an emergency delegates conference to deliberate and decide on those hunting for his head they should stay away from him.

They claim his suspension can only be done by a simple majority of votes cast at emergency delegates conference.

"They are only mis-conducting themselves thinking that they can frustrate Mr. Atta to leave the party. We support him and we would rally behind him" they told The Heritage. Contacted, Mr. Atta told The Heritage that nobody had told him or written to him suspending him hence the news on Joy FM was a surprise to him.

Mr. Atta said Nuworsu, Dzamesi and Amematekpor are using the Joy FM Correspondent Emefa Dzansi-Asamoah to gag those who are opposed to their nefarious activities which is ridiculing the party in the region.

He pointed out that the term of the present regional executive expired on July 8, 2003 and that its members are only living on borrowed time.

The regional Secretary said his alleged suspension contravenes the NPP constitution Articles 3 (E) 1 &2 and 10, saying further that there had not been any enquiry into his conduct by a disciplinary committee and that any such suspension is an "irresponsible act of cowardice".

He said he did not know the offence that he was being suspended for since the nature of it has not been communicated to him in writing and no disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against him as prescribed by their constitution.
