Volunteer Service not for disgruntled and poor people - Director

Wed, 5 Sep 2007 Source: GNA

Ho, Sept 5, GNA - Mr George Gado, National Coordinator of the National Volunteer Service on Tuesday dismissed the notion that National Service was for the disgruntled and the poor.

He said rather, enlistment into national or volunteer service was an opportunity for both young and old to demonstrate patriotism by working in sometimes very difficult areas for small allowances. Mr Gado said this at an assessment and selection ceremony for some 500 graduates from tertiary institutions and retired teachers who had applied to be recruited into the Volunteer Service.

He noted that while there were many unemployed youth in the country, it took only those with the "passion for the nation to decide to serve it voluntarily".

He advised the volunteers to share their experiences with others. Mr Ken Gyenfi, Volta Regional Coordinator of the National Service Scheme, advised the retired teachers to serve as role models to their students and younger volunteers. 05 Sept 07
