Livelihood Empowerment Ghana (LEG), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), at the weekend presented food items to needy and vulnerable women in the Asutifi North District of Brong-Ahafo Region.
The more than 50 beneficiaries, comprising widows and the aged, were drawn from Kensare, Tutuka, Manu Shed, Tailorkrom, Amankonakrom, Ntotroso, Kenyase Number One, Kenyase Number two, Wamahinso, Abenaakrom and Gyedu.
Each of them received two mini bags of rice, (5kg), a gallon of oil and assorted soaps.
According to the NGO, funding of the items was from the 9,000 US Dollar assistance Ghana received from the Global GreenGrant Fund to support the victims of the June 3 disaster in Accra which left more than 150 people dead.
Mr. Richard Adjei-Poku, the Executive Director of LEG, said the amount was meant to support victims of the disaster who are Brong-Ahafo citizens but only three of them were identified as such and supported.
Mr. Adjei-Poku explained that some of the local people whose farms were affected by the operations of the Newmont Ghana Gold Limited (NGGL) Ahafo Mine did not use their compensations judiciously; hence they were now wallowing in extreme poverty.
Nana Adwoa Nyantakyiwaa, the Queenmother of Ntotroso New site, on behalf of the beneficiaries thanked the NGO for the support.
She noted that because the residents lost their farms to NGGL, women in the area needed assistance to engage in petty trading and other economic activities for their upkeep.
LEG is an environment, social and human rights advocacy NGO formed in 2004 in response to the growing threats from the operations of Newmont Ahafo Mine’s project.
It has since served as the voice for the voiceless in mining communities at Ahafo in Brong-Ahafo and Akyem in the Eastern Regions.
