THE PRESIDENT of the Western Region House of Chiefs, Kasapreko Kwame Bassanyi III, has stated that citizens of the region, particularly traditional rulers, need not complicate the region’s regrettable situation with actions that destroy the little gains made.
“We should not let our actions tend to tout to the whole world our unwillingness to undertake and engage in progressive and development-friendly activities.
Kasapreko Bassanyi III impressed upon chiefs in the region to ensure that they bring dignity and respect to chieftaincy institutions, so that their subjects and the general public can uphold and respect the authority vested in them by their people.
The president of the Western Region House of Chiefs made these remarks at the end-of-year general meeting of the House in Sekondi last Monday.
He advised that traditional rulers should maintain peace in their areas for development to thrive and, in this view, wondered why there are many cases pending before the House, and many more conflicts being reported daily in the region.
“Conflicts and disputes constitute a major assault on the peace and tranquility we are striving to establish, in order to create an atmosphere conducive to business and development”. He noted.
Kasapreko Bassanyi III bemoaned the fact that the region has always been cited as one of the most chieftaincy-proned conflict areas in the country, adding “this does not augur well for a region like ours which is already lagging behind in terms of development”.
He appealed to the House to carve a new image that the region would be seen as indispensable partners to our communities development process.
Kasapreko Bassanyi II who is also the paramount chief of Wassa Amenfi traditional area, advised chiefs in the region to create land banks so that they could make them available to potential investors in their respective areas.
He emphasised that since the region has the land and naturally endowed resources, what the region now needs is to create an enabling environment to attract the needed government support and investors to develop the region.
“We should make it possible for people to acquire land for development so as to create opportunities for jobs for the youth”. The president of the House stressed.
He asked for collaboration and team work among members of the House, rather than disputes which, he contended, would get them nowhere.
