Wenchi (B/A), June 24, GNA- Statistics show that most domestic violence cases reported at the WAJU in Sunyani emanate from the Wenchi District, Deputy Superintendent of Police Alex Yartey Tawiah said on Wednesday. He noted that culture-based violence such as female genital mutilation and widowhood rites are some of the common cases reported. DSP Tawiah, who is also the Commander of the Sunyani WAJU was speaking at the opening of a division of the unit at Wenchi. The unit, second in the region is attached to the Wenchi divisional police headquarters. DSP Tawiah stated that the opening of the unit had become necessary because most cases reported at the Sunyani office were from Wenchi district. DSP Tawiah announced that another divisional unit would be opened in Berekum district next week. He urged officers at the station to be fair and firm in discharging their duties. He advised them to work hard to win the confidence of the people, "since victims and perpetrators have their constitutional rights which must not be trampled upon". DSP Ernest Akwasi Mensah, acting Police Divisional Commander, urged the personnel to ensure that "justice takes its course" and work without fear or favour. He urged the personnel to lead exemplary lives for the people to emulate, expressing regret that the lifestyles of some policemen left much to be desired. 24 June 04
