Wa, Oct. 8, GNA - In a desire to achieve sustainable food security, 1,406 farmers including 329 women in the Wa Municipality have cultivated 1,892 acres of maize this year through the block farming initiative. The total cost of credit commitment in respect of ploughing, fertilize= r and seed input to enable the Municipality to realize its agricultural secto= r objectives amounted to 221,701 Ghana cedis. Mr Yakubu Duogu, Wa Municipal Chief Executive, made this known in his report on the activities of the Assembly at the two-day Second Ordinary Meeting which ended on Thursday. He said under the fertilizer subsidy policy, 78,835 bags of compound fertilizer, 33,670 bags of sulphate of ammonia and 1,100 bags of urea were received and sold at the approved subsidized prizes to farmers. Mr Duogu said 8,000 animals comprising goats, sheep, pets and cattle were vaccinated against various diseases including anthrax and rabies. The Municipal Chief Executive expressed grave concern about the poor revenue mobilization in the municipality which was making it impossible to meet some genuine commitments to the people. Out of an estimated target of 324,799 Ghana cedis revenue for the year= , only 104,406 Ghana cedis representing 32 per cent was collected as at the end of July. He said the Assembly's share of 51,321.54 Common Fund received for t= he first quarter of this year fell short of its expectation and if that trend continued, it would stall the implementation of some projects such as the completion of the Assembly's office complex. Mr Duogu reminded all members of the Assembly and zonal councillors that the District Development Facility was introduced not only to encourage efficiency and effectiveness in performance but also to engender competitio= n in service delivery.
