Some communities in the Mpohor Wassa East District of the Western Region continue to enjoy free electricity after years of being hooked to the national grid under the rural electrification project.

The communities, include Mamponso, Senchim, Enyanbra, Abeyaw, Adukrom, Jerusalem Town and Essaman.

Ghana News Agency’s investigation over the past year has revealed that though some of the inhabitants of the communities were concerned about the situation and thus had made several efforts to rectify the anomaly, the authorities of the power company are yet to act.

Mr. John Hayford-Kwofie, an assembly member in the area, who confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency, expressed worry, saying, “Though my people are enjoying for free now, we are afraid of the high bills in arrears that would be brought in the near future.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana News Agency’s investigation at the Electricity Company (ECG) revealed that such situations usually occur when some politicians contract companies other than the ECG to connect the communities as part of their campaign strategies.

In such scenarios, the ECG lacks the requisite information, data, photos and diagrams to help them in computations and billing a source said.
