Water level in dam at Cape Coast improves

Cape Coast, May 20, GNA- All Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) in the Cape Coast Municipality, which have not re-opened due to the water shortage in the municipality, have been asked to re-open by Tuesday, May 25.

Mr Michael Essandoh, Central Regional Co-ordinating Director, who told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Cape Coast on Thursday, said the schools have been asked to reopen in view of the increased level of water in the Brimsu Dam due to recent rainfalls.

He said St Augustine's, Adisadel and Ghana National Colleges are to re-open on Monday, and Mfantsipim and Aggrey Memorial on Tuesday. Holy Child and Wesley Girls High Schools have already re-opened The decision was arrived at a meeting with the regional and municipal directors of the Ghana Education Service (GES), heads of SSS and the Regional Chief Manager of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL). Mr Godwin Dovlo, Regional Manager of the GWCL told the GNA that, the level of the Brimsu Dam, has increased to 13 feet, 4 inches, as at Thursday, due to recent rainfalls in the area.

This, he said, would make it possible for the company, to increase water supply from 25 percent to 50 percent by the end of the week.

Mr Dovlo said until the dam's maximum operating level of 24 feet is attained, the company would be augmenting water supply with the 30 water tankers at its disposal.

It would be recalled that, about a month ago, second cycle schools in Cape Coast and its environs were asked by the regional directorate of education, to postpone their re-opening dates indefinitely, due to acute water shortage in the town.
