Water shortage hit Mamakrom

Coaltar (E/R), April 1, GNA - Acute water shortage has hit Mamakrom near Coaltar in the Eastern Region and for over one month the people have to walk several kilometres in search of water for their domestic activities.

Conducting the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to inspect the only source of their drinking water on Thursday, Okyeame Ntow Ahwireng, also the Chairman of the School Management Committee at Mamakrom, said the people, mostly women and children have to wake up at dawn and walk long distances for water.

He noted that one could only go once with a bucket or a pan and since they become tired, the bucket or two had to be managed for cooking and drinking.

Okyeame Ahwireng said the situation was becoming alarming that some of the inhabitants could not get water to bath after returning from their farms, saying they also could not wash their children's dirty dresses.

He regretted that Asu-Afu river had dried up while the only borehole in the area has broken down beyond repairs.
