We are not sleeping, NADMO assures

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has assured that necessary steps will be taken to provide support to persons who will be displaced by disasters with the setting in of the rainy season.

Though admitting it has challenges with logistics, the Organisation announced that it has deployed teams to various locations in the country to help victims of disasters.

Speaking to TV3 a day after a heavy downpour displaced hundreds of people in Accra, the National Organiser of NADMO, Kofi Portuphy, said aids from schools, churches, non-governmental organizations and individuals have come handy and will be made available to victims of Thursday’s floods.

He, however, lamented the weakness of some state institutions to enforce some of its by-laws, stressing that is a major cause of flooding in the capital city during the rainy season.

“[But] we have various teams ready,” he said.

“We are full of action. We are not sleeping. We are all over the place.” Experts have predicted heavy rainfalls this season, advising all and sundry to make adequate provisions to mitigate their effects.

According to a release on Thursday by the Ghana Meteorological Agency, this month will witness regular downpours.

“For low lying areas and most of the coastal areas, the situation is likely to give rise to flooding. The public is therefore advised to exercise caution when crossing water ways and narrow bridges.”
