Mortuary Assistants at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have decried what they describe as poor conditions of service.

According to them, the meagre nature of salary as well as allowances given to them has left them perpetually assigned to hardship.

They alleged that they sometimes have to buy hand gloves with their monies adding that they lack logistics to do their work.

A worker at KATH mortuary speaking to Abusua FM’s Osei Kwadwo disclosed that working conditions have become terrible to the extent that they have to buy working gadgets with their own pocket money.

According to him, a majority of the mortuary assistants are casual workers and are not paid by the Controller and Accountant General but receive their salaries from the hospital’s coffers.

“Poor conditions of service is making the work difficult for us. The conditions are so terrible that sometimes the same hand gloves have to be used for several days before new ones are provided for us and mostly we buy it with our own pocket money. Aside the poor conditions of service, the environment situation is very bad which is harmful to our health. The situation is disheartening and something has to be done about it,” he complained.

He added that most of the workers have been there over ten years (10) and they are still tagged casual workers.

He, therefore, called on government and the Ministry of Health to come to their aid and improve their conditions of service.

Meanwhile, the PRO of KATH Kwame Frimpong speaking in an interview with Abusua FM’s Nana Ama Annie assured the workers that their concerns would be addressed.
