The Foundation for Security Development in Africa, FOSDA, in collaboration with Ghana Action Network on Small Arms, has launched the Northern Regional Week of Action against the illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Tamale. The launch attracted some Northern regional Members of Parliament, cross-section of media practitioners, students, security persons, traditional rulers, religious leaders and opinion leaders.
Addressing the participants on behalf of the Northern regional Minister, the Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Alhaji Iddrisu Adam urged all stakeholders, especially the youth in Yendi and Tamale, to be ware of those who would want to use them to cause mayhem in the area. He urged them to channel their energies into fruitful ventures, which he said would go a long way to promote security and human dignity in the region.
The Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive noted that violence and conflict retards development. The Communication Officer of FOSDA, Kofi Bruno Ametepey said the main essence of the programme is to sensitise the people on the dangers of possessing illegal firearms. He said it will be extended to other parts of the country like Volta region. The weeklong celebration involves debate among students on dangers of firearms, Public Forum and video shows among other activities.
