The government has constructed a double-steel link bridge at Wenchiki in the Chereponi District of the Northern Region, to ensure an all-year round transportation across the district, its environs and neighbouring districts.
The steel link bridge was constructed over a low-lying area, which gets flooded especially during the rainy season, disrupting transportation, which affects economic activities of the people as they are cut off from major marketing centres.
Mr Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, assisted by the Chief of Wenchiki, cut the sod to formally inaugurate the facility at Wenchiki on Wednesday.
Mr Vanderpuye, accompanied by Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, Deputy Northern Regional Minister, was in the district to canvass support for Saturday’s National Sanitation Exercise, to be hosted by the Northern Region.
He said construction of the bridge would boost economic activities of the people, since the bridge was a link to most major markets within the Chereponi District and other districts, including Bunkpurugu Yunyoo and Bawku in the Upper East Region.
Hajia Mary Nakobu, District Chief Executive for Chereponi, said the District Assembly was considering collecting bridge tolls to generate resources to maintain the bridge whenever it was damaged.
Boba Aworfu, Chief of Wenchiki, commended the President for redeeming his promise to construct the bridge in the area to boost the economic activities of the people, and prayed for the success of the government.
Mr Vanderpuye and Alhaji Fuseini also paid courtesy calls on the Paramount Chief of the Saboba Traditional Area, the Chiefs of Savelugu and Nanton to inform as well as seek their support for the sanitation exercise.
The government, about three months ago, launched the National Sanitation Exercise and set aside every first Saturday of every month as National Sanitation Day, for the citizenry to clean their surroundings to rid the country of filth.
The two Deputy Ministers also inspected development projects in the Saboba District, including the construction of new classroom blocks for Takpab Roman Catholic Primary School and a dam at Kujoni under the Ghana Social Opportunities Project, which provides water for members of the community.
Other projects inspected included the on-going construction of a Police Station at Nanton, and a classroom block for Langa Primary School in the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality.
Mr Vanderpuye later addressed staff of the Savelugu/Nanton Municipal Assembly, and urged them to be dedicated to their work, as well as serve the public with respect.
While urging all to join the Saturday’s sanitation exercise, Alhaji . Fuseini also underscored the importance of decentralization in national development, and urged all to participate in next month’s District Assembly Elections.
