West African College of Nursing, holds biennial meeting at Winneba

Winneba (C/R) Oct. 12 GNA- A biennial general meeting of the Ghana Chapter of the West African College of Nursing (WACA) has opened at Winneba.

The Deputy Minister of Health, Mr. Moses Dani Baah addressed the opening of the five-day meeting which was on the theme: "The Role of the West African College of Nursing in the Ministry of Health".

WACA formed in 1981 by English-speaking West African countries including Ghana, Nigeria, Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone, aimed among other things to promote excellence in nursing education at the basic and post-basic levels, and to maintain the standards of practice of nursing within the sub-region.

Mr. Baah said government was committed to the policy to motivate all category of health workers to give-of their best especially in the deprived and remote communities.

"I hope that when the policy is fully implemented nurses and midwives will consider staying back to improve the health status of Ghanaians instead of leaving for greener pastures."

Mr Baah said Ghana was going through challenging times which required health personnel to make sacrifices to ensure that the people enjoy better access to health care.

The Chief Nursing Officer, Hajia Mariama Sumani called on the Government to expedite action on measures to improve on the lot of nurses.

The President of the Ghana Chapter of WACN, Mrs. Ruth Gyan asked the participants to come out with decisions that would help improve health delivery in the country.
