Esther Ambah Numaba Cobbah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Stratcom Africa, is questioning why women are being taxed for experiencing their menstrual cycle.
On May 28, World Menstrual Hygiene Day is recognized globally, and to mark the occasion, Stratcom Africa, in partnership with UNICEF and the Ghana Education Service, hosted an event.
The event's goal was to empower women to openly discuss menstruation-related topics and to reinforce the idea that menstruation is a fundamental right that should not be violated.
During the event, Esther Ambah Numaba Cobbah expressed her confusion about the taxation of women for exercising their rights monthly, stressing the importance of changing the narrative.
"Why should we be taxed for bleeding every month? Why should we be taxed for undergoing a process that ensures the continuity of our nation, Ghana? It is our right, and that is how we should frame it. The narrative needs to shift. Sanitary towels are not just luxury items; they are necessities, like water, that all humans require," she stated.
The CEO of Stratcom Africa encouraged women to initiate dialogues that include men, as this would help men understand and support the menstrual cycle.
"Women should not limit themselves. We should aim to sit at the table and invite men to join us, educating them on how policies can be developed to benefit all individuals because, ultimately, we give birth to both men and women. Therefore, there needs to be a conversation. Women must free their minds regarding issues that impact them, and when we can openly discuss them, men will listen. Let's help men comprehend," she urged.
The 2024 World Menstrual Hygiene Day was observed under the theme "Together for a Period-Friendly World."
