Winneba (C/R), Feb. 25, GNA - The Winneba District branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has put in place measures to help reduce accidents on the Winneba-Kasoa-Accra road, particularly involving their vehicles. Under the measures, vehicles from their Accra and Winneba stations are loaded according to their shift and not on first come first serve basis.
Mr Kofi Atta, chairman of the branch, who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Winneba on Thursday, said the Union has identified the causes of most of the accidents on the road as over speeding hence, the institution of the measures.
He explained that if a driver over speeds and overtakes vehicle that left the station before him, that vehicles would not be loaded and the driver would also be questioned how he managed to arrive earlier than the vehicle ahead of him.
According to the branch chairman, since the institution of the measure, about one and half years ago, none of their vehicles had been involved in any accident, adding that, the union registered accident free last year.
Mr Kofi Atta appealed to other drivers on the Takoradi-Accra road to be very careful now that the road was going to be good to avoid accidents.
He said if accidents on the road increased with the rehabilitation of the road, then the aims and objective of the rehabilitation would be defeated.
"We must make travelling on the road very safe and comfortable to passengers than to make it a dead trap".
He also urged passengers not to force drivers to over speed on the grounds that they are in a hurry to reach their destinations, because over speeding causes accident.
