Women willing to do more if allowed to progress - Madam Broni

Kumasi, Sept 09, GNA - An Assistant Programme Manager of CEDEP, an NGO based in Kumasi, has said women were willing to do more if allowed to progress from primary through secondary and tertiary education. She said women were also prepared to participate in governance when given equitable resources.

Madam Matilda Nyantakyi Broni, Assistant Manager of CEDEP in-charge of Training and Research, said contributions that women make to the economic, social and political lives of the country made them key actors in effective development.

Speaking at a forum on women organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in Kumasi on Thursday, she said women contributed more than half of all the goods and services produced in the country.

The forum, which was attended by women's group in the Kumasi metropolis, was to review and discuss past activities of the groups in relation to their advancement so as to strategise for the future. She asked that priority be given to women's NGOs that were active in sustainable development to facilitate investment in innovative information and communication technologies.

Mr Kusi Aborah, the Ashanti Regional director of the NCCE, said the constitution had placed a huge obligation on the Commission to spearhead efforts at educating the public on their rights.

He said the Commission had therefore picked the task of enhancing citizen's participation in local governance for poverty reduction. "With this special attention, recognition has been given to empower them to increase their knowledge base and participation in district level politics and also afford them the opportunity to access various state interventions for poverty reduction.''
