Kumasi, Dec.17, GNA- Wood technologists and experts met in Kumasi on Friday to discuss ways of reducing waste in the wood industry. The meeting which was organised by the Ghana Land and Forest Policy Support Facility (GLFPSF) in conjunction with the Bureau of Integrated Rural Development (BIRD), aimed at strengthening links with wood-based industries to reduce waste.

Mr Ketiboa Blay, Technical Review and Monitoring Consultant of the GLFPSF, said between 30 to 50 per cent of wood products generated in the country, go waste annually.

He attributed this to improper processing of wood at both forest and industrial levels.

Mr Blay said even though wastage could be minimised, there was lack of adequate policy direction to deal with the problem.

He said the objective of the GLFPSF was to raise awareness of stakeholders in the wood industry, stimulate and encourage initiation of policies and programmes to diversify the wood industry. Mr Blay charged the participants to come out with concrete suggestion that could help reduce waste in the industry.
