Workers encouraged to test their HIV/AIDS status

Takoradi, April 28, - GNA - Mr. Robert Blankson, an HIV/AIDS activist, on Wednesday called on Ghanaian workers to patronise the Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) being undertaken in some health institutions.

"This would enable you to have your peace of mind and live a more productive and careful life," he said.

Mr. Blankson was addressing the Western Regional Women's Committee of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) at Takoradi as part of activities to mark International Women's Day in the region.

He said women who are mostly the victims of the HIV/AIDS disease should take VCT seriously and insist, on the use of appropriate contraceptive methods.

Mr. Blankson said out of fear, ignorance and apathy, many people have persistently refused to undergo VCT and would prefer to live, without knowing their HIV/AIDS status.

He cautioned that any neglect, display of disrespect and other negative attitudes towards people living with the disease, could make them feel hurt and thereby spread it carelessly.

Mr. Blankson therefore called on Ghanaians to live and support HIV/AIDS victims irrespective of the sex, age or social relations.

Mrs Elisabeth Fiadjoe, Regional Chairperson of the committee said the International Women's Day is celebrated annually to discuss pertinent issues relating to women and the society as a whole.

She said as "workers, mothers and home keepers, we must not continue to live in ignorance since there is a lot of information on diseases and every female worker, must be abreast with events.
