Workshop on accountability, service delivery ends

Members of the Local Accountability Networks (LANets) in the Effutu Municipality have attended a two-day capacity building workshop on monitoring service delivery and development projects in the community.

The workshop on the theme: “Strengthening Citizens’ Participation to Enhance Quality Service Delivery,” was organised by Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) with the support from United Nation Development Programme.

Ms Sandra Arthur, Programmes Officer of GACC, said the workshop was part of a project by the coalition to build the capacity of LANets members on policy engagements at the local level.

She said it was also to promote accountability and transparency for better service delivery and development at the grassroots level.

Ms Arthur said as part of the project implementation, GACC has organised similar workshops for LANets members in Ada West District.

She urged participants to use effective communication tools in their interaction with community members for the needed feedback on policy decision and action.

Ms Arthur urged them to utilise the knowledge and skills they have acquired to support each other towards the sustainability of the activities of LANets.

Mr Simon Bokor, Dean, Management Development and Training of the Institute of Local Government Studies, Mr Samuel Harrison-Codjoe and Ms Sandra Arthur from GACC, were the resource persons who schooled the participants on the concepts of governance and decentralisation.

Topics treated included the local government system of the country; policy environment of metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies; and civil society policy engagement and monitoring tools.

“The foundation of good governance is knowledge, hence citizens should be abreast with development issues in their localities and by so doing they will be able to make positive contributions to matters that affect their livelihood,” Mr Bokor said.
