Goaso (B/A), Aug. 24 GNA- Tropenbos International, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) engaged in forest protection programmes in the country has held a workshop for 60 community leaders and District Forest officers at Goaso in Asunafo District of Brong Ahafo.
The workshop dealt with findings of a research the organization conducted in 13 fringe communities of the district's forests areas to disctuss problems affecting the protection of forests in the district. The research targeted at exploiters of the forests including timber contractors and illegal chainsaw operators.
Mr George Yaw Boakye, Asunafo District Chief Executive, Said at the workshop that the Assembly derived much of its revenue from royalties from the forest.
Mr Samuel Kwabena Nketia, leader of the Tropenbos called for the intensification of alternative livelihood programmes to reduce pressure on the forests.
Participants called on groups and agencies working towards the protection of the forests to re-define their roles to avoid duplication of functions.
