Kumasi, June 8, GNA- A two-day stakeholders consultative workshop for the development of a policy framework on street children in Ghana opened in Kumasi on Tuesday.
The workshop, is being organised by the Ministry of Manpower Development and Employment in collaboration with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the African Centre for Human Development, is aimed at having preparatory work towards the policy framework.
Participants from Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) on child issues, Women and Juvenile Unit (WAJU) of the Ghana Police Service, Department of Social Welfare, the media, traditional authorities, Muslim organisations and the KMA, are attending the workshop.
In an address, Mr Wilber Tengey, Executive Director of the African Centre for Human Development, facilitators of the workshop, said the issue of street children had become a social problem, which needed concerted efforts by all stakeholders.
He said the development of a legal framework would help provide a co-ordinated approach to solve the problem.
It would also provide the government, NGOs and other service providers the opportunity to target their interventions more accurately. Mr Tengey urged the participants to take the workshop seriously and come out with strategies that would help reduce streetism in the country.
