Bongo(U/E), March 9, GNA - World Vision International-Ghana (WVI), is contributing 10 million cedis every year to the Bongo District Assembly, towards the sponsorship of needy students and paying volunteer teachers in the district a total allowance of 59 million cedis annually. It is also putting up a three-unit classroom and office facility each in six communities in the district.
Mr. Clement Apikiya, Bongo District Chief Executive, said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bongo at the weekend. He commended WVI for doing a lot to improve the standard of living of the people in the district adding, "the success story of WVI is on the lips of school children, parents, Assembly Members and almost all the people in the area, and we are grateful to the Bongo Area Development Project (BADP) of WVI for achieving these remarkable and enviable results within such a short time."
He said a 600-million-cedi Resource Centre, comprising a well-stocked library, Computer Centre, Recreational facilities for children and Television sets for the community was recently commissioned and is now in use.
Mr. Apikiya said 140 Junior Secondary School (JSS) leavers and school drop-outs are also being trained in carpentry, cloth weaving, Hair dressing, and bicycle/motor mechanics, 51 of whom passed out recently and given equipment to start work on their own.
Miss Regina A-ura, who was sponsored under the WVI scheme to learn catering, said she was given cooking utensils and some money to start a chop-bar on her own, and that was doing well until recently when she was commissioned to run the Canteen at the Bongo Social Centre. Another beneficiary, Miss Philomena Ayipaala, said she now weaves the local cotton cloth commonly used for sewing smocks and was happy with her work.
The two young women between them have six apprentices under training.
