Residents of Yeji, a major fishing community in the Pru District of the Brong-Ahafo Region have lauded the proposed creation of the Bono East Region for the purpose of development.

They commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for fulfilling another 2016 campaign pledge, which according to them would help unearth and tap the economic potentials of the area.

The residents pleaded with the Justice Stephen Allan Brobbey’s Commission of Inquiry facilitating the constitutional processes for the creation of the new regions, to critically analyse the content of their petition and help to alleviate the plight of the people in the proposed region.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Yeji, capital town of the District, prior to a public hearing on the creation of the Bono East Region, the residents said the deplorable condition of the fish market at Yeji needed urgent rehabilitation and expansion works.

Madam Alice Nyarko, a fish monger said the market had no sheds and washrooms, whilst security was non-existent.

Mr. Peter Awudi, a teacher said the creation of the region had come at an opportune time because of the inadequate educational facilities in the area.

Yaw Debi, a student, said the area needs more public Senior High Schools (SHSs) to take in the many Junior High School graduates.

A fishmonger, Salifu Fuseni, noted that, the population at Yeji was fast growing, and that, basic social amenities must also be improved to correspond with the population growth.

Meanwhile, the Methodist Church at Yeji, the venue for the event was filled to capacity, as traders, market women and school children crowded there in their numbers to participate in the hearing.

It was like a street carnival, as the residents paraded through the principal streets of the Yeji Township to welcome the Commissioners and some officials of the Ministry of Regional Re-organisation and Development to the area, amidst dancing and drumming.

To demonstrate their desire for a new region, some chiefs and queens, as well as teachers and school children held placards with inscriptions such as "We thank You Nana Akufo-Addo", " Free SHS, We thank NPP", "President We Need Our Region" and "Bono East Region will push development forward".
