The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has kicked against the re-nomination of the Yendi District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Mohammed Habib Tijani, for consideration for a second-term in office, as DCE for the area.
The reaction follows the release of the latest batch of District Chief Executives (DCEs), from the office of chief of Staff and Minister for Presidential Affairs, a couple of days earlier. According to NDC, whose disgust at the re-nomination was contained in a release signed by its acting General-Secretary, Bede Ziedeng and made available to the media, yesterday, he stated, "since President Kufuor started the process of appointment of DCEs, in his second-term, NDC has had cause to raise questions about many of his actions, and the latest nomination of Mohammed H. Tijani has only added to the blunders."
NDC, in the release, queried the performance of the Yendi DCE, whom it observed, failed to provide the needed protection for the Ya-Na Yakubu Andani, when he was attacked in broad daylight, alongside 40 others. "His role, as chairman of the District Security Committee (DISEC), left much to be desired, and amounted to a dereliction of duty on that occasion," the statement mentioned.' Continuing, the statement recalled the appointment of the Wuako Commission to investigate the circumstances which led to the murder of the late Ya Na, adding that, the commission recommended the re-assigning of the DCE, but this was ignored.
"One would have thought that having left him to complete his term, President Kufuor would, now, have respected the recommendation of the Wuako Commission, by not re-nominating him as DCE for Yendi," the NDC noted. The party stated that the people of Yendi, especially, those from the Andani, gate need to be spared the pain and anguish of having to deal with the man who failed to provide the protection for their King, adding that, this action is only a confirmation that President Kufuor is only concerned with the interest of his party but cares little about the rest of Ghanaians.
NDC also, punched President Kufuor over what it described as his disregard for the decentralization process, as the cornerstone of the nation's development, "because peace and security at the District level, are a sine qua non, for development under the decentralization process," adding that, "it, therefore, stands to reason that any person who has performed, so disastrously, in this respect, ought to have been entrusted with this responsibility, a second time."
