Youth cautioned against ill acts during Awubia festival

Nai Ncharkey Okine VII, Adontenhene of Awutu Beraku Traditional Area, has cautioned people attending this year’s Awubia festival to desist from acts that could mar the beauty of the celebration.

He mentioned drug abuse, vandalism, sexual and promiscuous activities as some of the acts that should be avoided.

Nai Okine VII, who is also the Chairman of this year’s Awubia festival committee, said this in an interview with Ghana News Agency on Saturday at Awutu Beraku.

This year’s festival is under the theme: “Peaceful Co-existence for Accelerated Development”.

The Awubia festival is celebrated by the Awutu people to signify the cutting and harvesting of wheat. The festival started last Thursday, August 30, 2012 with the sprinkling of red marsh (dough) to symbolize the harvest period.

The highlight of the festival would be a durbar of the chiefs and people of Awutu on Monday, September 3rd, which is expected to be addressed by President John Dramani Mahama.

He said before the durbar, libation would be poured at the “Ancestors Forest” in memory of their departed souls.

Nai Okine VII said there would be clean-up exercise on September 6th, in the district and the traditional capital to climax the festival.

The Road Safety Commission had been invited as part of the activities to sensitize residents, especially drivers in the area on road safety regulations.
