Aboabo Number Four (B/A), May 26, GNA - The youth of Aboabo Number Four in the Dormaa District have threatened mayhem if the traditional authorities did not dissociate them from a lingering chieftaincy dispute in the town.
The youth, who described the protracted dispute as a feud within the Mireku Royal Family, said any further attempt by the traditional authorities to link them to the dispute would possibly "trigger a situation worse than the Yendi crisis".
Mr Williams Oppong Kyekyeku, the youth leader, expressed the youth's astonishment that the traditional authorities had "gradually but systematically dragged the youth into what is purely a Royal Family affair".
The youth affirmed their absolute neutrality in all chieftaincy issues in the area and appealed to the government and Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu, President of Dormaa Traditional Council, to intervene to secure the immediate release of four colleagues, including the Assembly Member for the area, who had been remanded by the Berekum Circuit Court in connection with recent clashes in the town.
Mr Oppong Kyekyeku showed a list of 15 other names allegedly submitted by Okogyeatuo Agyemang, chief of the town, to the Berekum Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Christian Dedzo, for arrest.
"Some of those on the list were not even in town during the chaos that followed the installation of the queen mother of the area", he said.
The youth leader stated that any attempt to arrest the 15 "innocent" youth would be met with resistance.
Mr Oppong Kyekyeku said they had contacted both the Gyasehene and the Kyidomhene of the Mireku Royal Family to try and weld the feuding factions for a lasting peace in the area.
"We the youth don't have the power to make nor unmake chiefs and queen mothers, ours is the quest for development in a peaceful atmosphere", the youth leader said.
