Dr Zanetor Rawlings, Parliamentary Candidate of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Klottey Korley on Saturday, June 4, joined party faithful to clean the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and its environs of filth.
Dr Rawlings initiative was to observe the National Sanitation Day in the Greater Accra Region and also in commemoration with the victims of the June 3, 2015 twin disaster, at the circle, which claimed 150 lives and injured others, some with permanent blemish.
She told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the June 3 floods that led to the GOIL station catching fire and setting ablaze lives and property, could have been prevented if people had observed the basics rules of environmental cleanliness.
She said: “People cannot just drop waste in the nearby Korle Lagoon and expect disaster -free rains.
“I am therefore here to join people in the constituency to desilt choked gutters and clean the environment to show the way that disasters are preventable.
“As a medical doctor, I am also aware of the effects of malaria and water borne diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea on the people,” she said.
Dr Rawlings said unclean environment also leads to needless deaths such as maternal and infant mortality.
She commended the city authorities for dredging the lagoon to ensure free flow of water to avert future disaster.
Dr Rawlings was joined by “Choose JM” Group and Zoomlion, a sanitary management company for the eight hours exercise.
