Alhaji Yussuf Captain, Coordinator of Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said plans were advanced by government to offer scholarships to qualified Zongo students to study in various fields of academic excellence.
He said courses under the scholarship include Medicine, Engineering, and Oil and Gas adding that the first batch of applicants were in the screening process after which recommendations would be made to government for implementation.
Alhaji Captain was briefing the Greater Accra Regional Council of Muslim Zongo Chiefs on government plans to developed Muslim and zongo communities through education and proper maintenance of sanitation.
He said the number of students who applied for the scholarship was encouraging and appealed to government to expand the scheme for more students to benefit.
He advised parents in the zongo communities to take advantage of the school feeding programme and send their wards to school.
Alhaji Bawa Ismael, Executive Member of the Caucus, and former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, said the drain from Kanda to Mamobi, which was a major problem to the community, was under construction and expressed the hope that it would be completed soon to prevent flooding in the area.
“This would also improve the environmental degradation and pollution and help solve the problem of poor sanitation in the area,” he said.
