Zoomlion Company Limited has called for a more concerted effort and stringent measures among all stakeholders to rid the nation of poor waste management practices, insanitary conditions and their related problems.
Mr. John Sackey, Northern Regional Manager of Zoomlion, who made the call, said a lot of resources and attention had gone into fighting the country’s waste and environmental sanitation problems in recent years with the inception of the public-private partnership, however, more needed to be done.
He made the call in Tamale on Tuesday during the handing-over of 20 waste trucks to 20 districts and municipalities of the Northern Region, aimed at improving waste collection.
“I am of the complete conviction that the time has come for all stakeholders of the sanitation sector, in whatever capacity we find ourselves - policy makers, public office holders, researchers, operators; to face our problems head on and strive to pull the nation out of the doldrums for better life and accelerated development,” he stated.
Mr. Sackey said Zoomlion would always want to lead the industry by example and had thought it wise to strengthen its partnership with the Local Government Authorities by injecting more logistics in their operations through the expansion of fleet of trucks and machinery in attaining its goals.
He said the trucks delivered would complement the existing ones to enhance their capacities to deliver higher quality waste management services to the people of the Region.
Mr. San Nasamu Asabigi, Deputy Northern Regional Minister, who received the trucks on behalf of the MMDAs, commended Zoomlion Ghana for providing effective sanitation services to the nation; resulting in ridding most cities and towns of waste.
He called on Ghanaians to make good use of the waste bins dotted across the country to complement the work of the company saying that, ‘avoid littering and indiscriminately disposing off waster to keep Ghana clean’.
Mr. Asabigi said, the Government was committed to promoting community-led Total Sanitation projects in towns and cities that would rid the country of waste and reduce diseases related to waste.
He said, when the country’s sanitation systems were improved; little public funds would be spent on controlling poor sanitation and related diseases such as cholera and malaria but would be spent on productive ventures such as infrastructural development.
