Kumasi, March 09, GNA - The Security Services Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has described as false the allegation that there were lapses in the security system leading to a state of insecurity on the campus.
Lieutenant-Colonel William Addo (RTD), Head of the Security Services Department of KNUST, said it was also not true that the security men collect bribes from students and strangers so as to compromise their duties and responsibilities.
Lt-Col Addo was reacting to allegations of bribe-taking and other unhealthy practices among some security men of the university at a forum organised by the Students' Representative Council (SRC) of KNUST in Kumasi on Wednesday.
The forum was to find measures to curb the incidence of stealing, mobile phone snatching, robbery and harassment of students at the university in recent times.
Some students accused the security men of being negligent, citing bribe taking, sleeping whilst at post and irregular patrols that made it easy for miscreants to invade the university to carry out nefarious activities.
Lt-Col Addo said since last year, authorities of the university had sought to improve upon the security situation on campus, saying plans were far advanced to provide the Security Services Department with communication gadgets for effective co-ordination among security men. He said measures had also been put in place to increase the number of security men as the university was embarking on regular recruitment exercises, adding that training programme for the recruits had been revised to bring it to standard.
Mr David Asante-Boateng, SRC President of KNUST, appealed to the students to resolve to expose students and people with suspicious characters to authorities.
He stressed the need for the extension of electricity to isolated areas of the campus to ensure easy identification of infiltrators.
