Inland port will not be a success without water from Ejisu - DCE

Ejisu (Ash), March 09, GNA - Mr Yaw Ahenkora Afrifa, District Chief Executive for Ejisu-Juaben, has said the Boankra Inland Port would not succeed without adequate and reliable water supply from Ejisu. He has therefore appealed to the government and the World Bank to include Ejisu in communities that will benefit from the Small Water and Sanitation Project in the district.

Mr Afrifa was speaking at a meeting with officials of the World Bank, consultants to the project, district planners and members of the small water and sanitation at Ejisu to discuss progress made to provide potable water to some communities in the district.

He said the exclusion of Ejisu from benefiting from the project was most unfortunate and blamed the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) that claims that Ejisu was under its jurisdiction.

Mr Afrifa said the position of GWCL therefore makes it impossible for any other water organisation or non-governmental organisation engaged in the provision of water to undertake any water project at Ejisu.

Giving the historical background to the Ejisu water problem, he said the town enjoyed potable water from standpipes in the 1960s but this stopped when the booster broke down.

As a stopgap measure, a tanker supplied water to the town but this tanker was sent to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Mr Afrifa said residents of Ejisu now get water from boreholes and wells that are inadequate.
