Accra, June 3, GNA - The Young People's Guild (YPG) of the La Bethel Presbyterian Church of Ghana, on Saturday presented gifts worth about five million cedis to the Dzorwulu Special School for the Mentally Handicapped.

The items, were made up of bags of rice, beverages, soft drinks and Fun Milk products, as well as toilet rolls, cards, 'Ludu and Oware', for indoor games.

The gesture was part of activities to mark the group's 65th anniversary celebrations. Members of the group treated the children with songs of inspiration, soft drinks for refreshment and interacted with them to make them feel accepted by society.

Ms. Veronica Bassaw, Director of the School, called for more public support and assistance, especially in the area of infrastructural development and the purchase of an additional vehicle to support the school for her multiple rounds.

She also said the school needed additional classroom blocks and dormitories to ensure the proper tuition and special care for the 150 children. She also urged parents to give equal priorities to their special children as the other normal children.

She complained that parents often give priority to their other normal children, while neglecting the needs of their children in the special schools. Mr. Seth Sowah Ako-Nai, Secretary of the Anniversary Planning Committee of the YPG, said it was also important as Christians to help the children with such special needs.

He called on other churches and organisations to show their love to the children, not only through annual donations, but also through visits to help demystify the negative societal perceptions of children with special needs.
