Accra, July 1, GNA - The Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon, on Saturday started the celebration of its annual Republic Day Jamboree with the official launch of the hall's Golden Jubilee next year.

The Jubilee, which would be under the theme 'fifty years of solidarity and human resource development in Ghana' was being spearheaded by Ghana's illustrious sons, including, Justice Modibo Ocran of the Supreme Court, Nana Akuoko Sarpong, Omanhene of Agogo Traditional Area and former Inspector General of Police, Mr Peter Nanfuri, all past members of the hall.

The annual republic day jamboree was aimed at raising funds to improve existing facilities as well as new ones in the hall, which currently has about 500 students.

Launching it, Nana Akuoko-Sarpong recalled the history of the hall, saying it was originally proclaimed as the Third Hall of the University but was renamed Commonwealth Hall in 1957 following Ghana's attainment of independence and the its admission into the Commonwealth of Nations.

He said the history of Commonwealth Hall was bound up with some of the major landmarks in the foundation of Ghana, which also represented the defining moments in the quest for freedom and democracy after centuries of slavery and colonialism.

Nana Akuoko Sarpong said the word 'Vandal' which every past student of the hall bares, reflects only the identity of the products of the hall and not something that strikes any negative responses by its products.

'Let no one be deceived that the products of the hall are mere trouble causers since they are among the best gentlemen one can find. We are not destroyers but builders,' he said.

Mr Justice Anin Yeboah, Chairman of the Golden Jubilee Planning Committee urged Vandals, both old and new to contribute positively towards the success of the celebration next year.

He said the Old Vandal Association has began preparation in earnest so as to make the occasion, which shall offer activities such as a television documentary, awards night, float, fun games among others, a great one.

As part of the celebration, The Old Vandal also commissioned a 300 million-cedi underground water tanks for use by the Hall. 01 July 06
