Wassa Akropong (W/R), July 19, GNA - The Environmental Health Task Force of the Wassa Amenfi East District Assembly on Tuesday, seized a quantity of gari, fried fish and other food items that were for sale under unhygienic conditions at the Wassa Akropong market.

Mr Samuel Yaw Adom, the District Environmental and Sanitation Officer, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the exercise formed part of the programme of the task force to ensure that food was sold under hygienic conditions at markets places in the district.

He said the exercise was aimed at preventing the outbreak of epidemics particularly cholera in the area.

Mr Adom said the market women, whose wares were seized, would be put before a magistrate court before any decision to destroy the food items would be taken.

He advised food vendors to sell food under hygienic conditions and to go for medical examination to determine their health status. Mr Adom urged the public to buy only food prepared and sold under hygienic conditions to protect their health. He said another area of concern to the task force was the indiscriminate dumping of refuse and defecating in the area. 19 July 06
