Tarkwa, Jan. 31, GNA - A sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of an education office for Wassa West District was held at Tarkwa on Tuesday.

The first phase of the building, which is estimated to cost 750 million cedis, is sponsored by Goldfields Ghana Limited (GFGL) and would be completed by the end of June.

Mr. Michael Nsowah, the former Acting Director General of Ghana Education Service, said the project demonstrated GFGL's commitment to honour its social responsibility to communities in its area of operation and even beyond.

Mr Ludwig Eybers, GFGL Operations Manager, said GFGL was committed to improving the level of education and skills of people in the district in order to make them employable in the mining sector and other sectors of the economy.

He said the company has completed some projects in its area of operation and these include schools and teachers' quarters and had given scholarships to over 100 students.

Nana Kwabena Oboh, chief linguist, Apinto Divisional Area who spoke on behalf of Nana Kwabena Angu, Chief of Apinto Divisional Area, said Nana Angu was prepared to release tracts of land for the construction of a teacher training college.

He said the youth employed under the Youth Employment Programme should be given training before they are sent to the classroom to teach. Nana Oboh said those employed are inexperienced and their output would have negative effect on education in future.
