Accra, Aug 2, GNA - Mr. Nii Okaija Dinsey, Accra Metropolitan Director of Education, on Tuesday said knowledge in ICT should be considered as a human right issue to make its study compulsory so that it would be accorded the necessary attention it deserved.
Speaking at the inauguration of a computer laboratory for Kaneshie-Awudome One and Three Junior Secondary School (JSS) in Accra on Thursday, Mr. Dinsey said most schools in the country were now growing to know the importance of Information and Technology Communication Technology and therefore the initiative taken by the school was commendable.
He noted that most developed countries had come this far because they made good use of their human resource, which was well informed due to "the magic of ICT."
"Nowadays, in the developed countries, computers can do virtually everything and this is really helping them," he said. He said he hoped the centre would provide serious training in ICT and not be turned into an entertainment centre.
He pleaded with the Members of Parliament for the sub metro and other dignitaries to help with funds so that the laboratory would be well furnished to enhance the learning of ICT.
Mr Dinsey urged Ghanaians who are computer literates to support their less fortunate contemporaries and to go teach them also to gain knowledge in ICT.
Mrs. Elizabeth Sackey, MP for Okaikoi North said lack of education had led to people engaging in social vices such as armed robbery and streetism.
She said globalisation had been enhanced due to computers and that Ghana must go along with the global world.
She urged teachers and parents to train their children well in ICT so that they could compete effectively wherever they would find themselves.
Mr Lawrence Wurapa, Education Officer in-Charge of Okaikoi Sub-Metro said the school needed money to purchase about 60 computers with all its accessories and also connect them to the Internet so that all Okaikoi schools could have access to all the advantages that it offered.
