Nyinahin (Ash), Nov 28, GNA - Some residents along the Abuakwa-Bibiani main road in the Atwima area of Ashanti have urged the authorities to erect speed ramps on the road to control excessive speeding by motorists.

Nyinahin (Ash), Nov 28, GNA - Some residents along the Abuakwa-Bibiani main road in the Atwima area of Ashanti have urged the authorities to erect speed ramps on the road to control excessive speeding by motorists. They said motorists plying the road persistently flouted traffic regulations to the disadvantage of others, stressing that the erection of the ramps was crucial to compel them to observe the rules in order to save lives and property. The Atwima-Mponua District is estimated to have recorded about 40 road accidents between January to date, a situation which had been attributed to the carelessness on the part of drivers. According to the district police, 20 people died in the accidents whilst 120 sustained various degrees of injury. Speaking with the Ghana News Agency at Nyinahin and Agogoso on Tuesday, Opanin Yaw Bronya, the District Chief Farmer, appealed to the police to step up patrols on the road to check speeding and other reckless driving. "Most drivers take advantage of the absence of the police and do their own thing on the roads to the detriment of pedestrians and passengers," he said. Opanin Bronya warned that the situation could get out of hand if effective measures were not instituted to improve upon the current situation. Mr Akwasi Twumasi, assemblyman for Agogoso, also told the GNA that the erection of speed ramps would not only compel drivers to reduce speeding but would also force them to respect other road users. Mr Raphael Baffour-Awuah, a concerned citizen of Nyinahin, called on drivers to always service their vehicles to ensure that they were in good condition before they put them on the road. He also advised pedestrians to be extra careful and observe traffic regulations to minimize road accidents on the road. 28 Nov. 07
