Wa, Feb. 4, GNA - If there has ever been a day that people in the Wa Municipality forgot their individual worries and sorrows and went into jubilation in soul and spirit, then that was when the Black Stars of Ghana defeated their Nigerian counterparts, the Super Eagles at Ghana 2008.
After the Stars defeated the Eagles at the quarterfinal stages of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra it was all joy and jubilation amongst the fans. Happiness was visible in the faces of everybody, young and old, weak and strong as they took to the streets in wild jubilation over the victory, coming in swamps like bees amidst drumming and dancing, some in the bele-bele dancing style of the gallant players, singing "Black Stars we go do".
It was sometimes breathtaking to watch the skills some of the motor riders displayed on the streets, as some of the antics were very risky. The celebration was so intense that crossing the streets became a life-threatening situation because of the invasion of motorists, cyclists and some few cars as well as the swarming crowd that occupied every space in the streets.
The butchers in Wa were not left out as they came out carrying pieces of meat on their heads as they joined in the street carnival. Non-Muslims invaded the drinking bars to gladden their hearts and to make joy and pray to God for blessing the Stars with victory. A young lady, Safia Mohammed, who spoke to GNA Sports, said she was happy to have lived to see the Stars defeat the Super Eagles and that death would not matter much to her if it came the next moment. Abass Mohammed appealed to the players of the Black Stars put in extra effort to die hard for the country and make history for themselves.
He accused the referee for being unfair in some of his decisions especially against the Stars.
The celebrations went on well and ended this morning but the victory was still the main talk in the Wa Municipality among the people.
